Close to the south fringe of Salar de Arizaro, the sixth biggest salt level on earth and the second biggest in Argentina, 70 km from the town of Tolar Grande, lies an interesting volcanic pyramid. A very nearly impeccable cone, it climbs startlingly amidst the salt skillet. This is Cono de Arita and it approaches magnificently 122 meters over the Salar. Its name originates from the Aymara dialect where Arita signifies "sharp".
In the early twentieth century it was accepted that such a perfect cone could just have been assembled by man. However Cono de Arita is characteristic and accepted to be a little well of lava which needed quality to blast through the curst along these lines never threw lava or created a hole. Everything around the cone is black salt brought to the surface by old magma streams underground. As indicated by the archeological stays found in the cone, the spot was a ceremonial center before the entry of the Incas.
